Meditation is a specific technique for resting the
mind and attaining a state of consciousness that is
different from our normal waking state. In our busy
live, taking time to clear our minds of all the
important activities and problems of the day, all
the external stimuli, seems almost impossible.
Meditation involves a type of inner attention
that is quiet, concentrated, and at the same time
relaxed. Meditation following a yoga session is
easier because the body and mind are already in a
more relaxed state. Meditation is restful for the
mind.
Mediation can deepen muscle relaxation and
provide freedom from mental stress. Long-term
benefits from a regular practice include
strengthened immune system, control of appetite,
lifting of depression and fatigue, reduction in the
amount of sleep needed, and increased energy.
You can engage in meditation without doing yoga
and you can do yoga without engaging in meditation
but both are enhanced when you combine the two.
